The BasicsThe field of research regarding Emotional Intelligence has only been around since the 1980's. Most of the research in the field is attributed to Peter Salovey, John Mayer, Wayne Payne, Konstantin Vasily Petrides, and Daniel Goleman. Understanding emotional intelligence can help you better understand your feelings and behavior, and in turn better understand other people's feelings and behavior. This is helpful in the work field especially. An emotional intelligent person is often times someone in a leadership position because of their successful ability in handling the many different personalities of the world.

The 3 ModelsThere are three models of emotional intelligence; the ability model, developed mostly by Peter Salovey and John Mayer. This model focuses on processing emotional information and ones ability to excel in a social environment. The second model is the trait model. This was delevoped by Konstantin Vasily Petrides and is measured solely by self report. It focuses on individual behavior and self perception. The mixed model was developed by Daniel Goleman. This model focuses on personality characteristics.

The 5 Components of EIThe five components of Emotional Intelligence were developed by David Goleman in 1999. They represent the mixed model and is the most studied and practiced model in todays society. The 5 components are are self-regulation, self-awareness, internal motivation, empathy, and social skills. An individual that is all around emotionally mature displays all five of these qualities.
